Description

Strathfield Council first engaged us to carry out an Australian Standards (AS EN 14974:2021) safety and function inspection of the existing skatepark and its landscape infrastructure at Cooke Park. We physically used the facility, reviewing it with measuring tools, levels, a skateboard, LiDAR and a camera: checking the concrete for cracks, finish and strength, the steel for condition, fixings and lifespan, and the function of the park as a whole and of each individual element. The report rated each item by lifespan and repair priority, with a proposed response and cost, noting the repairs needed, the limitations of the existing street area and the minimal supporting infrastructure.

With Council’s commitment to fixing rather than replacing the existing park, this evolved into the necessary repairs plus an extension, designed with community feedback and documented as a tender construction package.

The extension doubles the existing footprint and lets users flow through the entire space or session individual elements and lines. The new elements complement the existing street-style park with more modern and previously missing elements, offering an array of street styles, heights and angles. Although the park isn’t high, its elements create opportunities for beginners through to more technical, advanced riders.

At-grade and DDA-compliant connections, coupled with CPTED principles giving clear sight lines into the entire space, make it welcoming for both active and passive users. New paths, seating, a shelter and planting add the supporting infrastructure the inspection found missing.

An exciting outcome, breathing a whole lot of new life into a well-loved park, and the perfect result from an annual inspection. (The final image shows the original skatepark before the works.)
