Korumburra Skatepark
Description
The Korumburra Skatepark replaces the well used but very tired steel ramps that were over 20 years old. Also updated was the location with the new skatepark now being shifted to the center of the Korumburra community. This location alongside the heritage train station and rail yards offered much better CPTED principles, connections to the rail trail and ability to tie into the sites historical aesthetics.
With an initial concept already provided by Council we undertook consultation with the local community to help shape their new space. The advanced users were clear in their contributions whilst the beginners wanted to ensure it was a space that fostered and allowed progression for all user types i.e. skate, BMX and scooter riders. The design needed to ensure it didn’t impose itself on the narrow site but rather integrated itself through at grade connections, lower heights, minimal batters and free drainage. The end result of the design and now built park as approved by the local community features a long central street focused area which includes banked/transition end, central funbox with varying heights and the required standard ledge and rail. Adjoining the street section is a wide mini ramp that caters for all user types and skill levels.
The railway connection is featured in the park where original railway tracks are utilised for a flat rail and sub-rail. Accompanying the funbox is our trademark local acknowledgement which in this instance a rideable soccer ball represents the sport being introduced into the community by the immigrants employed for the coal mining industry during the 19th century.
The community space is finished off with connection paths, refuge areas with seating and highlighted painting to ensure even more visual appeal!
