Description

Upon engagement the Ray Bastin skatepark and BMX run consisted of modular concrete elements and poor layout on a rough concrete surface (see in final image). Due to these conditions it offered little function and therefore didn’t get much use. Eastbywest and Baseplate were engaged to offer new life to this community facility.

A limited budget didn’t allow a complete start again process so we took the approach of grinding back the existing concrete slab for a smoother and more functioning finish. The modular elements were removed due to offering very limited function and lack of creativity. Initial research of the reserve offered insight into the teaching background of the namesake ‘Ray Bastin’, so as a way to pay homage to this defining profession we decided on elements that told this story. Whether its the paper clip rail, book to ruler spine/manual pad to the protractor bank with pencil kerb amongst various others. Collectively they offer an array of differing elements from quarter pipes, ledges, rails, banks, kickers, spines etc… Due to the range of elements we could ensure the space catered for a variety of skill levels through differing heights, angles and distances. The BMX run was updated by demolishing several of its ramps and replacing with more functioning elements that now work.

Finishing of the space it includes refuge areas with seating that match the broader reserves infrastructure.

Now that the park is completed the next step is to paint the elements to further reflect the designed and shaped stationary items. In summary a great result with the limited budget, as evident by the clips/photos of new users.
