Tatura Skatepark, Victoria, Australia
Description
A design and construction project with Drover Project commenced with a site inspection and community consultation. This initial meeting offered assurances of removing the existing and now unsafe old steel ramps along with a review of the proposed location with the opportunity to a slight relocation. The revised placing ensured the existing slab could be retained for a future basketball court and the skatepark could be more centralised within the site for better access and sight lines. The community consultation (in person and online) was delivered with two concepts, offering the community to nominate their preferred option. Once an option was chosen we could then collaboratively make the requested tweaks.
Being located in a regional town the design aims to tick numerous boxes with respect to the budget. It’s a space that offers incentives for beginners with a focus on challenging elements for the town’s advanced users. The type and layout of the elements are strongly suggestive of the large BMX and scooter local community. They are arranged so users can flow around the entire space, engaging with all elements in a single run. Also it should be noted as homage to the award winning local bakery the skatepark features a ‘vanilla slice’ as a usable element!
Delivered from consultation to construction handover in a very swift two months, the old steel ramps were swiftly replaced with a concrete skatepark, offering a lot more diversity, a range of challenges and a facility that requires less maintenance. We look forward to assisting Council in the next stages of hard and soft landscape infrastructure. And importantly seeing the progression of the users in their personally shaped skatepark.
